Co-Curricular

Northholm Grammar offers a broad range of co-curricular programs to suit our young people, believing that giving students access to these opportunities can have a profound impact on developing the whole person. Each student can select activities that help discover their interests and talents, build physical health and participate in nationally and internationally recognised competitions and programs.

Students can choose from a wide range of choices across fields of agriculture, creative arts, entrepreneurship, enrichment, leadership, music, oratory, outdoor education, performing arts, sport and STEM – there is something for everyone. These activities not only provide personal enjoyment for the individual child, but supports the development of various skills and interests, teaches teamwork and increases engagement in their school life.

Read our magazine The Arcadian to discover the outstanding achievements of Northholm students across the full range of opportunities.

Creative and Performing Arts

From Kindergarten all the way through to Year 12, students are invited to explore the creativity within themselves and the world around them through deliberate, engaging and challenging classes and opportunities. Our purpose-built Arts spaces include a Drama Room, Orchestra Room, Music Studio and Visual Arts studio to support a series of dynamic learning experiences such as classes, workshops, showcases and one-on-one mentoring.

Co-Curricular music is a vital part of life at Northholm and more than a third of our students are involved with our music ensembles. Students of any age can select from a broad range of instruments and join groups including concert bands, stage band, choirs and rock bands as well as flute, string, percussion, brass and guitar ensembles according to their ability. Performance opportunities are offered at various events to help students build confidence and resilience.

Students involved in drama gain a wealth of important life skills including quick-thinking, focus, working collaboratively in groups and reflection. Co-Curricular Drama productions, with Northholm students both on stage as performers and behind the scenes as crew, sees vertical year groups collaborating together to create spectacular performances. For those with an interest and affinity for Visual Arts, they have the chance to expand their learning with extra lessons beyond the classroom, given by practising artists in drawing and ceramics. The School has a proud history of award-winning artists at shows including the Castle Hill Show and the Sydney Royal Easter Show across mediums including drawing, ceramics, sculpture, painting and more.

Sport

Individual and team sports help students learn about themselves and develop real world skills including teamwork, persistence and resilience. All students are encouraged to participate actively in a broad range of sports. The inclusive nature of our Sports Program promotes a positive attitude towards health and fitness and a love of physical activity.

Northholm offers many opportunities for students to engage in healthy competition and the School has enjoyed a long tradition of sporting success. Our sports program includes, subject to interest, aerobics, equestrian, triathlon, football, netball, basketball, tennis, futsal, cricket, touch football, athletics and swimming.

Northholm is a member of Hills Zone Sports Association (HZSA), a collection of schools in Sydney’s Hills region. In the Primary Years and Secondary Years, the Association provides opportunities for students to take part in gala days and inter-school weekly sport which take place over a semester in a wide variety of sports. Further representative pathways exist for outstanding athletes.

Agriculture and Outdoor Education

With a working farm onsite at the School, agricultural activities are popular across all year groups from Gardening Club in the Primary Years to Cattle and Poultry Show Teams, where students prepare, train and compete at several competitions.

Northholm’s Camps Program contributes to the personal growth of the individual by providing a unique opportunity for practical engagement, developing students’ independence and self-reliance, challenging them to take risks in a structured environment and developing a sense of community and connection. The Northholm Camps Program is age specific and includes outdoor education opportunities from Year 4 onwards.

For students looking to challenge themselves, Northholm supports the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award for young people to attain standards of achievement and endeavour – to serve their communities, experience adventure and learn outside the classroom.

Entrepreneurship, Extension and Enrichment, STEM and Oratory

Northholm Grammar’s Entrepreneurship Program provides an exciting opportunity to introduce students to important life skills, the world of work, understanding themselves in a clearer manner and enterprise skills that are presented by community and business leaders.

Extension and Enrichment, STEM and oratory activities stimulate the mind across chess, languages, debating, public speaking, Lego, engineering and robotics. In addition, there are a range of competitive opportunities through the da Vinci Decathlon and ICAS – academic competitions that build problem solving, creative thinking and collaborative skills.
