Northholm student awarded second place in international essay competition

Congratulations to Justin Kim (Year 9) for achieving second place in the Kemper Human Rights Education Foundation Essay Competition.

The competition is open to students from Year 8 to Year 11 across the world. The Foundation’s goal is to motivate students towards the “Dream of intellectual unity”, of knowledge in the service of human rights and progress. Each year the Foundation sponsors two human rights essay contents, one for US students and one for international students, which asks entrants to consider a single question and judges the essays according to how clearly and well they answer the question posed and the extent to which they are supported by research.

The 2021 international competition, which received 83 entrants from 33 different countries, asked students ‘Does the distribution of income and wealth in your country and/or between countries violate human rights and if so what can and should be done about it?’. Justin’s entry, titled Land of the Fair Go? The State of Income and Wealth Distribution in Australia and What Australia Can Learn from Finland, explored the notion of egalitarianism in Australian culture in the context of wealth distribution and compared the handling of economic inequalities to another social democracy, Finland.

Northholm Grammar is thrilled that Justin received second place in the international competition for his essay, competing against other strong entrants. Justin embodies Northholm Grammar’s values of respect, integrity and compassions, and mission to encourage students to find purpose to become responsible global citizens.
