“The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” – Dr. Seuss
In a delightful celebration of imagination, Years 3 to 6 students in the Drama Club brought the enchanting world of beloved author and cartoonist, Dr. Seuss to life in the musical Seussical JR. Week after week, they gathered with excitement, immersing themselves in rehearsals as lines were memorised and characters took shape leading up to the production.
Seussical JR. offered audiences an unforgettable journey through the whimsical landscapes of Dr. Seuss, with the Opening Night taking place on Friday 25 October at Northholm Drama Theatre.
Beloved characters like Horton the Elephant (from Horton Hears a Who!) and the mischievous The Cat in the Hat (The Cat in the Hat) sprang to life on stage, woven together by a fantastical narrative. Seussical JR. weaves a story of friendship, loyalty and love. Despite all odds, Horton and Gertrude McFuzz (Gertrude McFuzz) band together to save the Whos and restore unity to the Jungle of Nool.
The production was a true collaboration, co-directed by Mr Matthew Garrett and Mrs Robyn Storey, along with Year 11 and Year 9 students Anisha Anandh, Kiralee Bray and Tiana Attia. Their guidance lent invaluable mentorship to the young cast, while Ms King’s choreography infused energy and movement, and Mrs Libby Cuza’s vocal coaching empowered students to project their voices with confidence and bring emotional depth to their characters.
One of the most rewarding elements of the Primary Years’ musical production was the bond formed between Year 6 students and their younger peers. Acting as mentors, the Year 6 students led with kindness and enthusiasm, helping to encourage and inspire the younger members of the cast.
Watching these young performers immerse themselves in Dr. Seuss’s world has been an absolute joy and a reminder of the boundless creativity within each of them. These experiences have laid a strong foundation for their future in the arts and beyond.
